Saffron: The World's Most Precious Ingredient

17 May 2026 · by Marie-Kelly

Rs 500,000 per kilogram

That is the current price of premium saffron — and I use it in two of my formulas.

I want to explain why.

What saffron actually does to skin

Saffron contains crocin, a powerful carotenoid that brightens hyperpigmentation at the cellular level. It also contains safranal — an antioxidant compound that neutralises free radicals more effectively than Vitamin C alone.

This is not marketing language. This is chemistry.

The sourcing story

My saffron comes from a small cooperative in Kashmir, India. The threads are hand-harvested from Crocus sativus flowers during a two-week window each autumn. Each flower produces exactly three stigmas.

I buy in very small quantities. Just enough for the batch.

How I use it

For the Golden Hour Body Butter, I cold-infuse saffron threads in sweet almond oil for 72 hours before incorporating into the formula. The oil turns a deep amber gold.

For the Saffron Rose Lip Balm, I use a concentrated saffron extract — just a few drops per batch, but you can see and feel the difference.

This is why these products are priced the way they are. And why they sell out.
